Darren Ross

Darren James Ross was a Black American from Portland, Oregon, born on December 25, 2001. His brother Danny acted as his primary caregiver during childhood and gained legal custody of him in 2013 after an investigation into their parents’ household. Darren played baseball and maintained close friendships with Gabe Brooks and Zoey Thomas. Danny’s death in 2022 became a major loss in Darren’s adult life.

Early Life and Background

Darren grew up with David and Dana in a household shaped by David’s volatility and abuse and Dana’s criticism, neglect, and failure to protect the children. Danny, approximately six years older than Darren, provided much of Darren’s daily care and protection before he had legal authority to do so.

Darren had known Gabe since tee-ball. Zoey later joined their friendship group during middle school. Baseball gave Darren a structured activity outside the household and remained one of his primary interests.

Personality and Communication

Darren was observant, direct, protective, and loyal. He paid close attention to Danny’s food, medication, symptoms, and energy and challenged Danny when he tried to conceal how unwell he felt.

His seriousness coexisted with age-appropriate humor and competition around Gabe and Zoey. Darren often expressed concern directly rather than softening it, especially with Danny.

Darren spoke African American English comfortably with family and close friends. He used a more formal register with teachers and officials.

Health and Disabilities

Darren experienced generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, migraines, joint pain and swelling, and medication sensitivity. His anxiety included hypervigilance about Danny’s safety and health, while his asthma was diagnosed after a respiratory illness required emergency care in 2013.

Joint pain affected Darren’s knees and ankles and contributed to his move from catcher to first base. Medication sensitivity required additional care when treatments were prescribed.

Physical Characteristics and Personal Life

During the custody period, Darren was approximately five feet four inches tall with a broad build. Adults sometimes treated him as older than he was because of his size.

After the custody ruling, Darren and Danny moved into a two-bedroom Portland apartment. Darren selected a dark-wood bed, dresser, and nightstand and decorated his room with a city skyline, Derek Jeter, and New York Yankees posters. The furniture and decorations were chosen specifically for him.

Darren enjoyed baseball, time with Gabe and Zoey, and waffles with syrup and whipped cream. He also helped monitor Danny’s medication and food as part of their daily life together.

A CPS investigation examined conditions in David and Dana’s household. Danny pursued custody once he had legal standing, and Darren told the court that he felt unsafe with his parents and wanted to live with Danny.

The proceedings included home evaluations, testimony about Danny’s housing and support network, and a hearing interrupted by Danny’s severe cyclic vomiting syndrome flare. The court ultimately granted Danny full custody of Darren.

Their chosen-family network helped them furnish the apartment and complete the move. The transition gave Darren a stable home and personal space under Danny’s guardianship.

Family and Core Relationships

David Ross and Dana Ross

David’s explosive behavior and Dana’s criticism and inaction made the family home unsafe. Both parents opposed Danny’s custody petition despite Darren’s stated wish to leave their household.

Danny was Darren’s brother, primary caregiver, and eventual legal guardian. Darren depended on Danny for housing, safety, and daily care while also monitoring Danny’s chronic illnesses and medication.

Danny died from a brain aneurysm in 2022. His death was separate from his cyclic vomiting syndrome and left Darren without the brother who had raised and protected him.

Zoey joined Darren and Gabe’s friendship during middle school. She supported Darren during the instability surrounding his home life and custody proceedings.

During winter 2013, Zoey brought newly transferred Rachel Williams to the group’s lunch table. Darren welcomed Rachel and became part of her first peer group after her years of home education.
